1Organ Donation and Hospital Development, BC Transplant, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Historically in British Columbia (BC), the donors per million (DPM) had been very low, 7.2 in 2009.

Nationally, there remains a shortage of available suitable organs for transplantation. While the  goal was to provide competent, culturally sensitive care for the donor; a loftier intent was to be able to increase the DPM for BC. In acheiving this, the ability to facilitate a larger number of transplants, and ultimately, make an impact on the waitlist.

BC implemented an In Hospital Organ Donation Coordinator (IHC) in 3 of 5 health authorities in 2012.  The IHC is present to facilitate and assist each HA with the education and resources for organ donation. These positions were expanded to include all BC HA's by 2015.

The current DPM in BC for 2022 was 29.89 and the highest in Canada. The addition of IHC's had a significant impact on the culture of donation, expansion of policy, and number of available, suitable organs for transplantation.
