Enhancing authorizations by honoring Hispanic cultures

Introduction: Due to the increase of the Hispanic organ donor pool across the country and the lower-than-average authorization rate for 2022. We have taken the initiative to identify how to serve them best when approaching Latino families. The response of how the Hispanic community feels underserved and under presented with regards to donation was overwhelming. So, we took the stance to get involved in all aspects across the board. As we will continue to see an increase within our Hispanic donors as well as Hispanic ethnicities waiting for the gift of life it’s time, we show up for them.
Method: After accepting my role as Family Service Coordinator and as a Latina, I focused my role on improving the authorization rate and increasing awareness of donation in the Hispanic community by having Nevada Donor Network participate in local Dia de los Muertos events in both Las Vegas, NV and Reno, NV in November of 2022. This event focuses on honoring deceased loved ones and typically celebrated in various Latino communities. We selected local events in both cities that emphasized Dia de los Muertos and honored the Hispanic community. We created alters that are like those created on Dia de los Muertos and honored in total 27 donors who were either apart or celebrated the Hispanic community. We invited each donor’s family and allowed them the voice to speak on their loved one and their experience in donation. The events featured multiple media outlets and had a large presence from Hispanic leaders in both communities.
Results: The results showed an increase in support from our donor families and Hispanic community in Nevada. Feedback from communities showed that they felt represented in the community and placed a positive emphasis on donation. We were able to identify the need for Hispanic families to feel represented in the donation community and began to address these concerns in our approaches with our Hispanic donors. From year to date there was a 13 % increase in authorizations from 2022 to 2023 in Hispanic organ donors in the state of Nevada.
Conclusion: With Hispanic families accounting for 19.6 % of Nevada approaches in 2022 and 18.6% in 2023, we realized how important it is to honor our Hispanic community to help increase our authorization rate. We must continue to stand with them and for them as across the nation will continue to expand.
