Establishment of an organ donation unit in accordance to the national laws and meeting the standards of regional KPIs in Tawam Hospital, Al Ain Region, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Introduction: With changes in the UAE Law in 2016 and 2017 that support organ donation, SEHA initiated collaborations to develop the Organ Donation (OD) and transplantation program in UAE. Tawam Hospital has been identified as an Organ Donation Unit under SEHA Health System. In 2019 an Organ Donation Committee was formed comprising of multidisciplinary team, operating under the guidance of the UAE Federal Law # 5 of 2016 and OD National Committee.
Objectives:
• To create Organ Donation positive culture within the hospital community.
• To improve the potential donor detection rate by promoting awareness.
• To maintain the quality management system in order to improve the OD process for better outcomes with each donor.
Implementations:
Establishing QMS:
• All the key stakeholders within the OD Program were identified and mapped.
• Completion of 64 working documents for Quality Management System including the Quality policy and SOPs.
• Established a standard system that allows reporting and monitoring of all types of donors of DBD.
• Established an internal audit plan in compliance with ISO and DTI’s requirements.
Education and Awareness:
• A total of 8 members of critical care physicians and the OD Nurse Coordinators got certified with Transplant Procurement Management Course from DTI Spain.
• 22 Critical Care physicians got certified with online Brain Death Determination Course from Neurocritical Care Society (NCS)
• General OD Awareness sessions for hospital employees started in 2018.
• In 2019, the OD Coordinator created an organ donation education program targeting the healthcare staff including physicians, nurses and allied health through:
1. OD Workshop done quarterly
2. Updates on Hospital Rating system covering all critical care nurses
3. General awareness session on ODU is incorporated in the nursing orientation program for the new hires.
Results:
• Upward trajectory in donor detection and brain death declaration
• Zero non- conformities with the QMS documents in the internal audits
• 10 actual donors in a span of 3 years from a region where the local population is not in favour of organ donation
• Achieved ISO 9001:2015 accreditation for the ODU in January 2023
Conclusion: Establishing an Organ Donation Unit in a hospital where the sytem was never in place is quite challenging as it evolves around attitude, beliefs, knowledge. Hence, the need to increase awareness on organ donation is the need of the hour- to the public, administrative, medical, nursing, and allied health professionals.
