Introduction: The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) has been a significant contributor to the field of organ donation since its inception in 1986. The Critical Pathways of Deceased Organ Donation has consistently demonstrated efficacy in identifying and converting potential donors after brain death (DBD) into utilized donors.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of SCOT's organ donation data was conducted, focusing on 2022 as the year of interest. In June 2022, SCOT introduced active deceased donor detection, involving transplant coordinators conducting systematic rounds in donor hospitals across Riyadh, Jeddah, and the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia. Monthly donor statistics were analyzed, including reported, documented, approached, and utilized donors. The data was used to assess the impact of the active deceased donor detection strategy on organ donation rates.

Results: A marked increased in organ donation activity was observed in the latter half of 2022, with a peak in reported, documented, and approached donors occurring between August and December. The strategic change resulted in a substantial enhancement in case reporting and consent rates, culminating in 80 consents within the Kingdom in 2022. On a monthly average, there were 51.92 reported donors, 31.75 documented donors, 26.16 approached donors, and 6.58 utilized donors. The lowest number of reported and documented donors transpired in April, with no utilized donors recorded.

Conclusion: The implementation of active deceased donor detection by SCOT underscores the program's dedication and effectiveness, paving the way for an optimistic future for organ donation in Saudi Arabia. The robust momentum observed in the second half of 2022 indicates the potential for saving and transforming more lives through altruistic acts of organ donation, emphasizing the importance and legacy of the deceased organ donation program. Future research should investigate opportunities for further enhancements in donor identification, consent rates, and overall organ donation processes to maximize the life-saving impact of such initiatives.
